Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the new year unfolds, so do critical tax deadlines that every individual taxpayer should be aware of. January 2026 marks the onset of various due dates concerning estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and proactive tax planning. Stay ahead by marking these important dates on your calendar.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Preparation Appointment

With the commencement of tax season, January serves as the ideal time to arrange for your tax preparation. If you haven't secured an appointment yet, we highly recommend doing so promptly to avoid potential scheduling conflicts later in the season.

January 12 - Submission of Employee Tips

For employees who earn tips, any amount exceeding $20 received during December must be reported to your employer by January 12. This can be done via IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement including your signature, personal details, employer’s information, and the total tips accrued during the specified period.Image 1

Employers are obligated to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your reported tips, integrating them with regular wage deductions. Should your regular wages fall short of covering the tax obligations, the deficient amount will be noted in box 8 of your W-2 form, and you will need to settle this when filing your tax return.

January 15 - Deadline for Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment

Ensure your fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year is submitted by January 15. Neglecting this deadline necessitates filing your 2025 return and settling the entire tax liability by February 2, 2026, to avert penalties.Image 3

Handling Weekends & Holidays:

If a due date coincides with a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically shifts to the subsequent business day that is not a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster-Affected Regions:

Taxpayers situated in declared disaster zones may receive extended filing deadlines. Visit FEMA Disaster Declarations and IRS Disaster Tax Relief for specifics on affected locations and extended due dates.Image 2
