Key Tax Deadlines for December 2025: Stay on Track

As we approach the year’s end, it's crucial to be vigilant about several tax deadlines and financial strategies that can optimize your returns. This comprehensive guide outlines important dates, including year-end tax planning, tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and final deductible payments for the tax year 2025.

December 1 - Year-End Tax Planning Imperatives

December is a pivotal month for taxpayers aiming to influence their 2025 financial outcomes. Significant changes in income, marital status, dependents, or major property sales require attention. Consult with a tax professional for a strategic planning session to ensure optimal tax results.

December 10 - Deadline for Reporting Tips

Employees earning over $20 in tips for November must submit IRS Form 4070 to their employer by December 10. Failure to report tips appropriately affects tax withholding and could lead to complications during tax season. Employers are responsible for withholding FICA and income taxes from your regular wages or report uncollected amounts in box 8 of your W-2 if wages fall short. Ensure all taxes are accounted for by the end of the fiscal year.

December 31 - Mandatory IRA Withdrawals

If you were born before January 1, 1952, December 31 is the last day to avoid penalties by withdrawing from your Traditional IRA. For those turning 73 in 2025, the first required distribution applies but can be deferred until April 1, 2026. If your financial institution is closed on December 31, make early arrangements to bypass end-of-year closures.

December 31 - Last Chance to Pay Deductible Expenses

All deductible expenses for the 2025 tax return must be paid by December 31, excluding IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, which are permissible beyond this date. If any planned transactions cannot be completed on December 31st, initiate them earlier as many institutions may not operate on the last day of the year.

Observing Weekends & Holidays

Due dates coinciding with weekends or legal holidays automatically extend to the next business day that isn’t a holiday. It’s essential to consider these adjustments to remain compliant without incurring penalties.

Extensions for Declared Disaster Areas

In areas designated as disaster zones, filing due dates are extended. Stay informed of the IRS and FEMA updates on disaster declarations impacting filing extensions by visiting their websites: FEMA and IRS.
