Understanding Hobby vs. Business Tax Implications

The distinction between a hobby and a business is crucial for taxpayers, especially when it comes to tax reporting. According to the IRS hobby loss rules, activities not categorized as profit-oriented must report income under line 8j on Schedule 1 of the 2025 Draft Form 1040. Unfortunately, deductions are not allowed for such activities. Since these are not considered profit-driven, there's typically no concern regarding Self-Employment (SE) taxes.
